The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has greatly affected the country’s tourism industry.

This is according to Department of Tourism Secretary Berna Romulo Puyat as she said that foreign tourist arrivals for the period of January to April have plunged to 54 percent to 1.3 million from 2.8 million in the same period last year.

“Please take note that we are using the term ‘foreign tourist arrivals’ and not just ‘foreign arrivals.’ With both international and domestic travel restrictions in effect for the entirety of April, there have been no visiting tourists, and therefore no revenue for the industry for this month,” she said.

The United Nations World Tourism Organization , however, had earlier reported that the unprecedented crisis brought by the COVID-19 pandemic has already caused a 22 percent fall in international tourist arrivals during the first quarter of 2020. It also added that the crisis could lead to an annual decline of between 60 percent and 80 percent when compared with last year’s figures.
