Doctors with verified Facebook accounts are sharing COVID-19 misinformation with their hundreds of thousands of followers

Doctors with verified accounts on Facebook and hundreds of thousands of followers are spreading coronavirus misinformation.

Facebook is trying to crack down on misinformation about coronavirus, but the accounts are still able to reach hundreds of thousands of people regularly. Verified doctors with hundreds of thousands of followers apiece on Facebook are using the social network to push misinformation about the coronavirus and peddle dubious treatments to huge numbers of people.

The accounts demonstrate how, even as Facebook attempts to crackdown on misinformation related to COVID-19, accounts pushing falsehoods are continuing to go viral on the social network as users seek out expert medical advice during the pandemic. Many of the accounts' videos have hundreds of thousands of views each, and they regularly get hundreds or thousands of likes on their posts.

Reached for comment, a Facebook spokesperson said the company had removed pieces of content from the accounts flagged for breaking the company's rules on coronavirus misinformation. In a statement, they said: "We're working to keep people safe by removing COVID-19 related misinformation that could lead to imminent harm, applying warning labels from fact checkers and promoting authoritative information at the top of News Feed." The accounts remain verified.
