Digital Bridge Institute is an arm of the Nigerian Communications Commission. Its President, Prof. Mohammed Ajiya, spoke to journalists on the institute’s role in the quest to actualise a digital economy in Nigeria. IHUOMA CHIEDOZIE was thereDigital Bridge Institute has been around for some years but its activities are not really very clear to members of the public. What is the role of the DBI?

These days, journalists file their reports electronically and if you don’t know how to touch the buttons and make these things happen, then you can’t perform. That is where we come in. You cannot separate sending of the information from telecommunications; so the mandate of the DBI covers both telecommunications and the ICT.

Like I said, a lot of people don’t know about the DBI but we are trying to involve the state governments and the local governments. If you have e-Government, you can do so many things from anywhere. The governor doesn’t have to come to his desk before he can work. He can be working while he is on the move. You can reach the governor while he is attending to official matters in Abuja and that way, the state will not suffer until he comes back.

Principally, in the DBI, what we do is training. We run certification courses and we also run a diploma programme, National Innovative Diploma. The NID is similar in all respects to the national diploma and it is also accredited by the National Board for Technical Education.

How many skills centres are active In Nigeria?

Definitely. For education teaches u how to remember but skill is what helps u to make the company run. School grades just reflect how well u can memorise however it's of no use when u come on the platform of jobs.
