PETALING JAYA: The government should gradually reopen its borders to business travellers from regional trading partners including Asean and China, says the Association of Belt and Road Malaysia.

Its president Datuk Seri Chuah Poh Khiang said this can be done with standard operating procedures and certain safety conditions in place.

He added that allowing these business travellers to Malaysia was crucial to revitalising the country's external trade and investment amidst the slow down in the domestic economy. "As the Covid-19 pandemic situation in Malaysia and some countries such as China, Thailand and Vietnam have stabilised as more comprehensive safety measures were put in place by the government, it is time to consider restoring cross-border trade and investment by phases.

Chuah noted that the country's exports in April this year dropped 23.8% to RM64.9bil, while imports also fell by 8% to RM68.4bil, resulting in a trade deficit of RM3.5bil, claiming that it is the first monthly trade deficit in the past 22 years.

Our First few-cases were due to open and relaxed borders...

MuhyiddinYassin Tan Sri, please DO NOT open our borders till Dec 2020. We don't know if they have the virus or are covid-19 carriers. How accurate is every temperature scanner at borders AND those purchased by companies ? There has been inaccurate readings. 🙏🙏

Please DO NOT open any of our borders till end Dec 2020. Nobody knows if they have the virus or are covid-19 carriers. What is the guarantee that every temperature scanners are working properly ? Don't let our frontliners hard work go to waste when another covid-19 wave occurs.

We need to open our borders. I run an export business. All my trade is with Asean countries and I can not visit my clients and they can't visit me. We produce specialist items which need prototype making and then inspection by our clients before we go into production.

Pls don’t open our borders yet IsmailSabri60 DGHisham MuhyiddinYassin AzminAli
