If you want to do something to support your Black colleagues, stop being nice at work (by Dana Weekes)

" And then Momma Weekes would usually end her rant with a warning directed at who else but me. "Okay, Dana? I don't ever want to hear you out here beingAt first, I was confused why my mom was so hell-bent on me not being nice, when we lived in a society where the opposite is the expectation and is rewarded, especially for women.

There are other parents who have done the same for their Black children — affirming the need to exercise their courage — knowing the institutionalized obstacles and challenges they would have to confront simply because of their race. And they also knew the conundrum we, their children, would have to navigate with frustration at almost every turn of our journey. The reality that often our courage to speak up, protest, and advocate for ourselves and change cannot be done by us alone.

These behaviors and norms are repetitive, just with different people and in different places — and the oral history of these experiences are longstanding. We've been lectured about these norms starting around the dinner table or at bedtime by our family members as an addendum to our first grade curriculum, and warned by our Black colleagues each time we enter any organization in the work world.

Our voices are consistently discredited not because there is no truth to our words, but because you cannot and often are unwilling to believe them. Sadly, it is never our words that really get more of your divided attention. Instead, it is our pain and our anger that has been stifled at the pace of your learning or longstanding indifference that does. And by the time you are ready to talk or even listen, we remain high-functioning despite battling from depression or we have simply departed.
