Leaked memos show American Airlines and United are urging more employees to leave or take unpaid time off before layoffs

As US airlines get closer to announcing layoffs, some carriers are doubling down on efforts to convince workers to quit sooner or take unpaid time off beforehand.

Frontline employees include pilots, flight attendants, gate agents, baggage handlers, and other roles directly involved with day-to-day flight operations. The VLOA reopening excludes pilots. The airline did not offer a paid leave option to most frontline employees, although pilots are considered separately due to their collective bargaining agreement with the airline.

"Many team members have shared that they would like to either extend their current leave of absence or reconsider a leave during this period of lower travel demand," the memo said. "To address this feedback and respond to our smaller summer schedule, we're reopening the voluntary leave of absence program for all frontline team members, excluding pilots.". However, domestic capacity will remain at just 55% of 2019 levels, while international capacity will be just 20%.
