Heavyweight unions and peak building groups, more often at war than not, are uniting behind a bid to keep construction under way and building sites open during Victoria’s harsh stage four lockdown.

Ahead of Victoria's government outlining today which businesses will be impacted under ramped-up restrictions, the Urban Development Institute of Australia is pitching a nine-point plan to keep the state’s construction industry safe and open."We are urging the government to keep the industry open as an essential industry, but with enhanced worksite management practices and mandatory, consistent contact tracing," UDIA boss Danni Hunter said in a letter to Premier Daniel Andrews.

In a show of just how united Victoria’s fractious building industry has become in the face of the pandemic, the UDIA has co-signed another memo to Premier Daniel Andrews with the militant CFMEU, three other major unions, the Property Council of Australia and several other industry bodies.

Glad cold hard cash could be the bond that brings them together. Makes you feel all warm and fuzzy doesn’t it?

Shame the teachers union don't unite to keep schools open ...

Because Unions work for People and without People you would have No Buisnesses

They won’t shut construction. The industry pays something like 40% of the taxes in the state.. they can’t afford to lose all that $$$

It’s for SIX WEEKS!!!!

Perhaps they can explain why I saw over a dozen construction workers in Flinders Lane this morning not wearing masks. For the record, they were just standing there on their phones or chatting

Doesn’t seem to have worked?

6 weeks = 6.3 billion loss to the economy in Vic, another 5 billion in claims approx & 312,000 jobs lost - from MBA CE Denita Wawn in the Financial Review - might be more the reason

Shut down retail. Take away the need for ppl to waste time at shopping centres. Supermarkets only. Cafes & restaurants take away only. Construction on limited timetables. Not half arsed, its keeping the economy going. Dont be a bunch of morons

If you shut down construction, you destroy the economy. Simple as that (and no, im not union).

There is 0% chance Dan Andrews will do something that negatively effects those who pay for him

No, we cannot have any more loopholes. Surely construction can halt for a mere 6 weeks so that the rest of victorians can have our lives and health back. We can rebuild our business and economy but we cannot recover lives lost .DanielAndrewsMP .ScottMorrisonMP stage4lockdown

Chinese apartment building stops for no man!!!! Or pandemic! Andrews is gutless!

Another half assed shutdown... “oh no the world is ending, curfews, 5km limits... etc” BUT not ending enough to stop construction sites- of which there have been hundreds of cases over the last few weeks... people are fools. Either FULL shutdown or let’s Sweden this up.

“Construction employees are five times less likely to contract COVID-19 than the rest of Victoria’s population” 😂 🙄

Nope, the CFMMEU think they're above the rules already given their effort protesting during a pandemic. They can go through the same thing the rest of us are going through. 6 weeks shutdown for you!

Rubbish, shut them down even if it's just in solidarity with the rest of the population. Six weeks, not hard. Easier on the police and army.

The Vic Government and Union are mates..... I can’t see him lockdown their mates the construction industry union, one of his buddies.....More likely the Vic government will entertain their needs! As most of them are Union mates and Lawyers buddies in the state Government.

As long as contractors are not spreading the virus. Everyone must be temperature 🤒 tested in and out of the construction site and proper WHS records/registers kept.

Don’t touch da bois, ok? You can cripple the rest of the country but not the bully bois in construction. They are untouchable.

It's 6 weeks, they can survive a shutdown. I've been home for 17 out of the last 19 weeks and feel until you are really affected by it, people don't seem to take it seriously. Maybe shutting down some of these other industries might see some more people take this seriously.

This is the issue so many will say there business is essential

If DanielAndrewsMP can't close down constructions then he is a complete and utter sell out hypocrite.
