, I was paying a load of student loan debt many times my annual salary. In my mind, I echoed a refrain I heard constantly as a kid — I'll never be able to save enough to retire anyway.

, though, to have a cushion for the future. I didn't want to totally miss out on the chance to start building long-term wealth while I was young. Instead of opening a Roth IRA like I should have for this goal, I opened an, an account which misses out on the tax advantages of retirement accounts. Looking back, I think I did that just because the account's name didn't involve retirement.

I always thought retirement savings would go right out the door to healthcare costs and groceries. But, that's not the case: These savings can build enough wealth to help you live a great life later on. As I started talking to retirees for Business Insider's, I found that these everyday people used their retirement savings to do amazing things.
