GELANG PATAH: The Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (Maqis) has thwarted an attempt to smuggle 281kg of grouper and mackerel to Singapore via the Second Link here.

Johor Maqis director Nur Afifah A. Rahmah said they detected the fishy activity when a lorry carrying the fresh fish reached the Sultan Abu Bakar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine complex around 1am on Friday .

She said the undeclared fish were hidden among other containers of fish that had the necessary permits. “Checks found 56kg of grouper and 225kg of mackerel kept in polystyrene boxes that did not have export permits, ” she said in a statement on Saturday .She added that all the fish were seized and the case was being investigated under Section 11 of the Quarantine and Inspection Services Act 2011, which is punishable under Section 11 of the same Act.

She said that if convicted, the owner of the lorry could face a fine of up to RM100,000, a jail term of not more than six years, or both. “Maqis will continuously monitor the import and export of agriculture consignments to ensure that the necessary permits are in place, in accordance with the law, ” she said.
