Restrictions in the Republic of Ireland are set to be ramped up from midnight on Wednesday at midnight, with a lockdown being imposed to similar levels to those seen in March.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin announced that all non-essential stores will be closed, restaurants will be limited to takeaway services only and people will be required to stay within five kilometers of their homes, while banning visits to other households — although social bubbles are in place for people to exercise together under limited conditions.Schools, construction sites and manufacturing industries will remain open, and top-level sport will still be able to take place behind closed doors.
If people comply with the restrictions, which will be in place until December 1, the country will be able to celebrate Christmas “in a meaningful way,” Mr Martin said. Ireland reported 1,269 new cases — who had a median age of 34 — the majority of which were in Meath, Dublin, Cork and Cavan. The Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan said there was a "substantial" increase in the number of hospitalisations from the disease across the country.
