Richard Branson says Virgin Orbit has spent $1 billion trying to get to space. The CEO of startup Rocket Lab says it needed a fraction of that to reach orbit.

Companies that have gone into space for less cost use rocket engines of traditional architecture. Engines like the Virgin's are more difficult to design. The Rocket Lab could not use its technology to launch its rocket from an airplane. This new technology ...
