Business leader David Gonski has stepped down as chair of ANZ but has recently joined LeapFrog, a private equity firm with a difference, run by Dr Andy Kuper.

Forbes has ranked LeapFrog as one of the top five companies in the world to watch. Dr Kuper told Sky News LeapFrog is essentially a private equity firm insofar as it purchases companies, grows them, and then sells them on, but it does differentiate itself from traditional private equity. “The difference is, all of those companies focus on these low-income excluded populations that we call emerging consumers,” Dr Kuper said.

Mr Gonski said for years philanthropy and profit-making were connected but kept apart. He explained that philanthropic pursuits were often made using a company’s profit, but rarely used as the mechanism to create revenue and then profit. “Why do you have to keep it completely separate,” Mr Gonski said. Dr Kuper said LeapFrog has meant that “profit meets purpose at the customer”. “The world for too long kept these two things apart,” he said.
