Meet some of the business owners impacted by Disneyland’s extended closure:

brings in, Ma said sales have plummeted by more than 80 percent. The impact of the extended closure is felt throughout the Anaheim GardenWalk. “Many of our neighboring shops, including both retailers and restaurants have permanently closed due to this prolonged closure of Disney.” Her hope is that businesses and standard operations will be back to normal as soon as possible thanks to the rollout of the coronavirus vaccinations.

One of Ma’s neighbors is Bertha Cortez and her partner Francisco Vasquez, who own Casa De Pancho Mexican Grill and Cantina at the Anaheim GardenWalk. “We had been open for a couple months and were planning our grand opening when the unfortunate news struck of the shutdowns,” said Cortez. The restaurant team figured the shutdowns would only last the original two weeks, but has now extended to almost ten months.

Hotels in and around Anaheim have taken a huge hit due to the closure of the Disneyland Resort. Fred Brown is part of a family-owned hotel ownership group that has been in Anaheim since 1974. The group has stake in five hotels with almost 800 rooms that have all been closed since mid-March 2020. “The effects of being closed down without one dollar of income for nine months is devastating. All of the fixed costs continue on a monthly basis as normal but there is no revenue to pay these expenses.

When asked what he would say to Governor Newsom if given the opportunity, Brown said, “The state has mandated that we close our businesses or our business drivers, but we have been given no assistance in keeping them afloat during this pandemic. On top of that, the governor has put the effects of the virus on the backs of the employers when it comes to continuing payroll, testing, and other restrictions.
