SIBU: The Sibu Central Market which houses 1,400-odd traders will be closed for one week from Feb 8 to 14 after 47 Covid-19 cases were reported there.

Sibu Municipal Council chairman Clarence Ting in a statement on Friday , said the decision was made for the safety of operators, staff, patrons and the public at large.

Ting said the council was acting on the directive issued by the Sibu health office on Feb 5 under Section 18 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1998 so that the council could properly sanitise the premises to curb the spread of Covid-19. “This is an effort to assist in flattening the curve of the pandemic during this difficult and challenging time," he said.
