A research paper claiming smokers are 23 per cent less likely to contract COVID-19 compared to non-smokers has been retracted by a European medical journal after it was revealed the study authors had financial ties to the tobacco industry.

EDMONTON -- A research paper claiming smokers are 23 per cent less likely to contract COVID-19 than non-smokers has been retracted by a European medical journal after it was revealed the study authors had financial ties to the tobacco industry.in COVID-19 patients admitted to hospital, and claimed that smokers were at a lower risk of acquiring the disease altogether.

At the time, Mier had a current and ongoing role in providing consultancy to the tobacco industry on tobacco harm reduction, and Poulas acted as a principal investigator for Greek NGO NOSMOKE, a science and innovation hub that has received funding from the tobacco industry., noting if the conflicts of interest had been disclosed during submission, “the editors would not have considered the article for publication.

Although the journal notes that “at no point was there a question of any scientific misconduct on the part of any of the authors,” both Mier and Poulas have rejected the journal’s retraction.Since the onset of the pandemic, there have been numerous studies related to COVID-19 and smoking, and sifting through them provides a confusing picture of just how a history of smoking affects a COVID-19 patient’s prognosis – or their chances of catching the virus in the first place.

I was right about to light up, phew

Oh just in time too...I was about to consider smoking for the first time in my life!! Phew!! 😬

Interesting, whose to say all these scientific papers about vaccines and masks don't have ties to the pharmaceutical industry?

And, given yours and 90% of other media poor reliability, on what grounds you expect everybody to believe this article and its 'story'? Most likely, these 2 experts contacted Tobacco Companies for their studies.. but it's more convenient for you to make up stories.. isn't it?

Ummm. Let me think. Covid or lung cancer?

Gotta love how any research that doesn’t fit the narrative is suppressed immediately

Happens all the time. I worked in a consulting firm, CEO a noted biologist and frequent expert witness in logging disputes. He took the side of who ever paid more.

I would hazard a guess that if your a long term smoker then covid would be bad for you.🤔

Something that destroys your lungs isn’t made better by something else that destroys your lungs? You don’t say!

I knew it!

Everything is about $$$

How did covid get to the AntArctic?

This just in people who buy nike less likely to contract covid.

Tobacco being dishonest Naw no way their like the government 100% honest say in day out

Big tobacco at it again. Remember when they paid Drs to tell us smoking was healthy? Ya well, big sugar and big animal agriculture were listening. Using same tactics to convince us their products are healthy. This is a reminder of lessons learned from these big lying industries.

That’s messed up . Just shows the type of person you are when you try to earn more profits despite jeopardizing the health of others . You have to be special kind of asshole to play a part in such a disgrace .

Yeah whoda thunk it

“at no point was there a question of any scientific misconduct on the part of any of the authors,”, of course their was!! those scientists should lose their credentials and never be allowed to publish anything ever again. this is how we weed misinformation and bullshit. no excuse
