South Africans are lagging behind in recycling and the fault lies not only with the consumer but also retailers, producers and brand owners.

It’s time for big businesss to step up and take responsibility for overfull landfills where much plastic packaging ends up, a new report suggests.

A new WWF report titled “Plastics: From Recycling to Recyclate” found that problematic food packaging, poorly informed consumers, poor design of plastic packaging, an unstable supply chain, and a lack of cooperation between brand owners, producers and retailers are among the many reasons why South Africa is lagging behind when it comes to recycling. The report looks at recycling from an industry perspective.

While there is potential for meaningful, systemic changes, the report notes there is a “general inertia” in the value chain.
