Four companies in the drug industry said that enough states have agreed to a $26 billion settlement of lawsuits over the opioid crisis for them to move ahead with it.

FILE - In this July 17, 2019 file photo, a pedestrian passes a McKesson sign on an office building in San Francisco. Four companies say they'll move ahead with a $26 billion settlement of lawsuits over the opioid crisis. An announcement from drug distributors AmerisourceBergen, Cardinal Health and McKesson came Saturday, Sept. 4, 2021.

An announcement from the three largest U.S. drug distribution companies and a confirmation from drugmaker Johnson & Johnson, which had previously announced that it would move ahead, came Saturday. That was the deadline for the companies to decide whether there was enough buy-in to continue the settlement plan.

Together, the settlements are likely to represent the biggest piece of a string of settlements between companies in the drug industry and state and local governments over the addiction and overdose epidemic in the U.S. Prescription opioids such as OxyContin and Vicodin and illicit ones such as heroin and illegally made fentanyl have been linked to more than 500,000 deaths in the U.S. since 2000.

Saturday’s milestone came days after a judge gave initial approval to a settlement worked out in bankruptcy court between OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma and some 3,000 plaintiffs. That deal could be worth $10 billion over time.

Help Families who where effected by opioid deaths ‼️💯

Doctors report drug ivermectin proving effective as treatment against COVID despite media backlash

This is where I love Justice system mechanics & manipulation. A corner st. Drug dealer will get murder charge if his client dies, yet a drug company family who killed so many with opiods go free.Sweet, justice on sale.

Won't be long now before the marijuana/cannabis industry has to pay out as well considering the product's carcinogenic roots and its contributions to America's cases of anxiety, depression, and suicides each year. I wonder if Chuck knows about this? SenSchumer CoryBooker
