Business groups meeting with the federal government are pleading for staff to be given faster and cheaper access to rapid virus tests to allow employees to return to work.

Business groups warn that virus-exposed staff are unable to come back to work safely while rapid antigen tests remain in short supply, making eased isolation requirements designed to reduce critical worker shortages less effective.

Supermarket shelves in Sydney are being stripped of fruit and vegetables as Coles and Woolworths struggle to maintain stocks.for close contacts working in the food and grocery distribution industry and emergency services, business leaders said requirements for daily testing threatened to overwhelm employers.

With governments already moving on supermarket supply chains after shelves have been left bare, other “essential” workers and industries under consideration for an exemption from isolation rules include transport workers, vets, physiotherapists and mental health counsellors, pathologists, teachers and childcare workers, electricity providers, gas and fuel suppliers, water and sewerage operators and garbage collectors.

Food and Grocery Council chief Tanya Barden said governments either needed to ensure manufacturers had affordable access to test kits, or water down the testing requirements because of difficulties securing rapid antigen tests.Advertisement
