A jam-packed closet led to the establishment of a Lake Forest business that is still thriving a century later.

“There was a brief discussion about what was going to happen to the clothes,” Stirling said. “In the end, she decided to open a store in Market Square, and opened the doors in 1922.” The business was called The Lake Forest Sports Shop at the time.[Most read] Dr. Ngozi Ezike, a familiar face throughout the pandemic, leaving post as top Illinois public health official in mid-March“She was buying and selling the clothes that were Coco Chanel and Coco Chanel-esque,” Stirling said.

By 1986, the business had four stores. At that time, Stirling and her family had just moved back from London to Lake Forest. She was pregnant with her third daughter.Stirling discovered that her father, Volney Foster, was contemplating closing his mother’s business. She had some experience with fashion having worked in London at a company that imported and exported English and American clothes back and forth between the two countries.

Compared to the original store created by her grandmother, Stirling said, “We’re more sophisticated. We’re faster on our feet. We’re more focused. We’re there to do business, and have fun while we’re doing it.”
