UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss says her government is working with partners to verify if Russian forces used chemical agents in an attack on the besieged south-eastern city of Mariupol in Ukraine.

She has tweeted after reports surfaced on social media following a warning from President Volodymyr Zellenskiyy in his daily evening address that Russia could use chemical weapons.

Any use of such weapons would be a callous escalation in this conflict and we will hold Putin and his regime to account. The concern comes after a far-right unit of Ukraine’s National Guard indicated that chemicals of an unknown origin were dropped by a drone on civilians in Mariupol. In his evening address to the nation, President Zellenskyy did not confirm if such weapons had in fact been deployed.
