Daily News | Business owners say weak enforcement is emboldening the violence on Philly’s South Street

each other and a crowd of people in the street on Saturday night, leaving three dead and 11 wounded.

failed to materialize. The record label owners “asked me if this is South Street all the time. ‘This is not the people that come to our bars and restaurants,’ I said to them. ‘These are young kids who have nothing to do, and it’s summer, and they want freedom to do what they want, with no repercussions.’”

“The complete lack of law and order on South Street and in too many neighborhoods” is the deeper cause, to McNichol. “Protect your citizens by creating AND ENFORCING laws,” he added, with emphasis. “Arrest individuals who commit crimes” and “keep dangerous individuals from committing repeat crimes. ... Allow police to do their job” so Philadelphians can “enjoy their city without endless fear, and businesses can prosper, not to crumble under the weight of fear.”, made a similar case.

Harris said that South Street draws visitors from neighboring counties and states and from up and down the East Coast. “If customers are not feeling safe, they are not going to come to South Street, and those restaurants won’t fill tables,” he added. “We get over a million visitors a year, tens of thousands every weekend.

No shit, really!? I wonder why they think that?

“The worst is, you get the motorbikes, dirt bikes, ATVs. It’s as if the police have a no-chase policy…they drive around the cops in what is supposed to be an area closed to traffic, and so they come to believe nobody’s going to stop them” Philadelphia PublicSafety

Used to hang out on South Street when we were in high school. Our parents had no fear and neither did we. How times have changed.

It’s not a thought, it’s an actual fact that DA_LarryKrasner has created this climate. And your paper has shielded him from every bit of criticism and fail constantly to hold him accountable in print for the highest murder rate this city has ever seen and the murders continue

Duh!! no fucking shit you stupid rag paper

Have cops have been on strike?

This is what City Council wanted. They passed the ordinance to stop enforcing vehicle violations, walk down the street drinking and smoking weed, hang out on corner, gamble, shoplifting all legal. Enforce quality of life issues and the law!

Well cops aren’t allowed to do anything anymore…all ya’ll saying defund the police etc, this is what happens and noone wants to become a cop bcuz the media. If cops just start shooting the samething will happen, innocent people will die!!

No shit!

Only some.

The situation is dire.

No kidding,.

This was always an inevitability after the “defund the police” movement. Hands up don’t shoot was based on a lie.

BlameDA_LarryKrasner he doesn’t enforce the law he pressures the cops to release the criminals

This is absolutely true !!!

When will the people of Philadelphia vote for their best interests instead of allowing this weak leadership to keep going? One more thing, no mules next time. NoMules

'Some business owners'....? ha! I'd like to meet the business owners who think everything in Philly is just hunky dory....geez! impeach Krasner4DA

We’ve been saying this since the summer riots of 2020. When you stop prosecuting nuisance crimes, major crimes are not punished as harshly as they should be. Violent criminals are being sentenced as if they stole something.

You get what you vote for…can’t blame this on anyone but the Democrats running/ruining the city.

Those business owners are correct

By the way this is not a mass shooting not by a long shot this is just three idiots exchanging gunfire

LOL.....the hell you say

Your paper is trash

TonyBrunoShow Left wing BS policies have created this bull💩. The DA lets criminals run wild and releases those arrested…. Its by design. These Commies want a total collapse of civilization so they can rebuild and control us all…. FK THAT….

No shit Sherlock! Have your 'journalists' left their homes in the last 2 years? You clowns keep kissing thug DA_LarryKrasner ass!

Damn poleeces

Great job PhillyMayor DA_LarryKrasner PPDCommish

The city re-elected the guy driving the lack of enforcement. You reap what you sow

Waited too long to state the obvious.

They’re saying it because its true. Its what Outlaw and Krasner want

OverheardPhl Sounds as though the police are picking & choosing. Could it be who’s palms get greased? Maybe form a BOA (like a HOA). Either way more political rhetoric & interventions will be coming!

What do you expect when the DA could care less about this city. He cares more about the criminals than the rest of us. Us includes all races.

Hey get what u voted for. Pro krasner area stop complaining

Let's eliminate these 'anti-nuisance' laws then...

Yep....turning a blind eye to things like shoplifting and turnstile jumping just makes things WORSE....Give 'em an inch and they take a mile, the saying says

How about try to change our energy as a whole it's a big ass negative cloud over us cuz y'all spend to much time focused on hate. Don't say hi to me when I speak nice then call me a ignorant piece of shit thru ur phone that should make u feel like a punk

U read these city posts you'd think somebody get the same feeling calling somebody a liberal like they called them a punk bitch or something its hilarious to me how people fight about the smallest things or give no ideas to help just try to spew hate and negativity

Cuz u can't have fun drives collecting a bunch of guns that don't work meanwhile somebody passing out ars and aks with ladders like they preparing the youngins for war

What anti law every bum in the city sleep on a vent downtown since I was a kid go thru there at nite it look like the walking dead I be scared to eat a hot dog from 7/11 out that bitch it be so dirty

PhillyMayor PhillyPolice PHLCouncil philadao and PhilaCourts For over four decades “that’s a shame”, “something gotta be done”, “that’s just the way it is” was our only response to senseless death. But why are city officials managing this crisis with the same attitude?

That is lawless Larry that your rag continues to cover for. Did you report on his not paying taxes or his office getting called out for lying, refusing to prosecute? bigtrial doing your job

Thanks Jim Kenney. Thanks Danielle Outlaw. Maybe we should stop electing city councilmen as mayor?

Magic 8 Ball says: True

Philly cops owning million dollar shore houses scamming overtime pay, scamming workman’s comp, refusing to get out the car taking their ball and going home like the spoiled babies they are. They’re the biggest criminal element in the city we’ve known this since the 70’s

These business owners are correct. I won't go to South Street after dark.

Please! Our police are not only totally disrespected but are seen as the enemy There is lawlessness because the one’s awhile are actually doing the work are hung out to dry ;

The cops like to congregate in one place. Think all the restaurant employees taking a smoke break the whole time except the whole shift. The big exception is when they need to put down a protest of a statue.

I don't know what happened down there... Used to be such a police presence that you couldn't even stand still for more than 5 mins before they told you to keep it moving.

Yep your police are fleecing you and participating in a work slow down because they are in their feelings about actual police accountability. Stop fleecing us

Thank you, South Street business owners, for admitting the truth.
