Upcoming 'toy tax' looks good on paper, industry says, but Canada's fragile aerospace industry is already feeling the pain

Worth around $7.5 million, a new Cessna Citation Jet would leave the importer on the hook for $750,000 the instant the aircraft arrived in Canada — regardless if it had a buyer or not.Article content

The industry got an uncertain reprieve Tuesday after the House of Commons adopted an NDP motion tabled by Elmwood-Transcona MP Daniel Blaikie, delaying implementation of aircraft levies until an undetermined time, but no earlier than Sept. 1. Sara Anghel, president of the National Marine Manufacturers Association, agreed with Mueller that a luxury tax would likewise inflict serious damage on Canada’s boatbuilding industry.

The tax, she said, would be easy for consumers to avoid — simply by purchasing and docking their boats outside of Canada. In 1991, former U.S. President George H.W. Bush signed a luxury tax into law passed by Congress that November.

You’re phrasing it like that’s not exactly what they’re after. YOU .WILL .OWN .NOTHING, And be happy

Jagmeet: let’s do it immediately!!!

So sad for the wealthy; fn pay up, slackers.

Why the fuck would the manufacturers get hit with this shit. The tax should be the burden of the wealthy people wanting toys. And any business buying a jet or prop plane for use in industry (not rich corporate business) should be exempt as well.

By design.

The thing conservatives have said since the dawn of time.

Canadian content law. Bring it back. Assholes dad got rid of it. It’s time Canada. Look after our own house. Come get some!

It’s was tried before.

Sounds like a liberal plan, perfect 👌

The rich postpone buying their yachts and airplanes and the middle class making the yachts airplanes are unemployed.

Is this like a spin on the trickle down because that never worked.

Small business or big business?

Between high fuel prices and luxury taxes Canada is not open fir business

Bull shit..

I’ll survive

But it makes envious people feel good. Why not give in to the most destructive emotion that is to get votes?

Sure ot will.

Tax. Tax. Tax.

Seeing as most the people using luxuries do it on taxpayers dime is just another general tax for the common man to pay.

Of course the editor would use a multi passenger jet in the article cover photo…except now a Cessna 172 is a ‘luxury’ aircraft under this political move to court low information voters.

I'm thinking the bigger the food bank gets, costs billions.

LOL RIGHT

Killing jobs and costing Canadians billions is music to the ears of blackface and jag meat.

This is why the NDP and their socialist ideologies will never succeed. They want to tax the rich business owners more to pay for the regular joes lifestyle. The rich will just pack up and take those jobs somewhere more profitable and create unemployment and poverty in Canada.

Too bad. Pay for once.

Won't anyone think of the billionaires?

The liberals are playing too much Monopoly and I recommend they go directly to jail, do not pass Go and be gone!

This country is nothing but tax, tax, tax. What the fk are we getting in return? My quality of life is destroyed by this regime.

🐂💩

The amount of rich person propaganda your newspaper spews is astonishing.

Economics doesn't seem to impact the liberal Government's decisions. They like things that sound good to their base. It doesn't matter whether it works or not. This is called policy by Twitter trend.
