“Ray was a bigger than life gentleman,” friend and Madison County Commissioner Phil Riddick said Saturday. “His personal integrity was rock solid. He loved the land and cared about Huntsville and what happened here. And he was a fervent church goer.” Carl T. Jones invested in land when he returned to Alabama in 1939 from Tennessee, where he moved to find work during the Great Depression. Those investments included the large farm on Garth Road that is one of the most beautiful land holdings in north Alabama. Originally 2,500 acres, it is also one of the largest active urban farms in the South. The Jones family also owns two other farms in Jackson and Marshall counties.

The family has developed or sold for development parts of the original farm. The Target shopping center sits on former Jones land, and family members are developing a planned community called Lendon with upscale homes across Carl T. Jones Drive from the farm.
