Australia's mining sector is facing a critical worker shortage that leaders say will stifle future projects if the industry cannot convince younger, more environmentally conscious generations to join its ranks.Industry leaders say it is the worst skills crisis in a generation
The report outlined that at least 107 projects, including coal, gold and critical minerals, were at risk of being impacted by the worker shortage. Some setbacks have included mining giant Glencore, which operates in Australia, pleading guilty recently to charges of bribery in South Africa.Glencore's Mount Isa Mine produces copper, lead and zinc.
"We've launched a program directly targeted at the hearts and minds of Gen Z, saying to them: 'don't stand on the sidelines throwing rocks, get involved in this industry — you be part of the transition as the industry and the world moves to net zero by 2050'," he said.
“Mining sector faces major skills shortage as environmental concerns deter Gen Z workers”. Surely there are enough ‘redundant’ mining workers to fill the gap?
The critical worker shortage is due to a critical pay shortage. In the past few years Australian miners have been lumbered with pay cuts ranging from 20 to 35%. Adequate compensation for working long shifts in dangerous conditions away from home and family will fix it.
Great pay but long hours and currently too many stories of women being sexually harassed or intimidated. If mining sector employers don’t fix those problems they will continue to miss out on some great employees who do not have penises.
The bad reputation of Mining companies isn't without merit. Environmental damage, damage to indigenous cultural sites, bad treatment of women..... but hey, the government should make taxpayers fork out for Mining grads for one of the richest sectors in the country.
Good on GenZ! dontdoit
Yeah sure I'd love to spend weeks at a time working 12 hour days in the middle of nowhere for call centre money
So IanEMacfarlane which is false? 1. The exorbitant suicides by males in the mining industry 2. Black lung re-emerging due to poor safety and testing & complacency 3. Contractors on shut downs getting short changed super & wages for travel. 4. Long swings 2 detriment of family
Weird how it doesn't talk about the mining industry's move towards subcontractors to avoid better conditions, shirking their national tax obligations and shifting wealth offshore, refuses to address sexual abuse and mental health concerns raised at the camps...
. Australia does not have a worker shortage. It has a shortage of businesses willing to pay a fair wage. And it has a skills shortage because businesses want workers to pay for their own training and then they only offer casual status employment. Feeling the pinch? Good. .
Dangerous environments, gotta learn to respect the ladies in the job too, great pay but at great sacrifice as in time away from home and family otherwise you’re sweet and if you hate it do it for a while and watch how you lifestyle changes….
And ABC is now publishing QRC propaganda? This is capitalism, you want workers? Simple- pay them and you will get them. There is no worker shortage, just a shortage of slaves.
Surprised this hasn't been twisted to be the fault of millennials.
If it takes an extra 100 years to dig up our mineral wealth ... then good. What's the rush?
woopsie, u forgot about all the sexual assaults on mine sites '... mining industry to set up register of sexual harassment perpetrators to help rein in abuse... after a state govt report detailed cases of 'horrifying' & 'appalling' behaviour against women
Maybe if they did some work around not destroying the world, Gen Z might be interested. It is the Industry and what it does, perhaps, that puts them off? Or the mega rich owners?
Oh well, they banned people with vaccine mandates when they did nothing to stop the spread so screw em..
Why aren’t women rushing to get into mining? I thought fixing the so-called gender wage gap was a priority. wagegap
I’ll take an electrical apprenticeship thanks
