Leading housing experts have called for a major overhaul of the government's rent assistance program, describing the payments to low-income households as 'inadequate' while rental costs continue to skyrocket.

"On current projections, this is going to help solve the problem," she said.

Ms Jackson added that increasing the stock of housing was not a quick fix and that rental assistance was a policy lever the government could alter to better support renters in the short term."It's not covering enough of [low-income households'] costs. It means low-income households in particular are in significant rental stress."Maggie Shambrook, 66, has started a support group for older women because of the challenges in the current rental market.

"All my savings, much of my super [is] gone because there is no way you can pay to live on this sort of money."I don't have much left, about 50-odd thousand, and if I live longer I won't have anything left." He said the new government faced a massive challenge of ensuring future retirees could be housed in secure and affordable homes.

The market can crash on its own or we can make it crash. The majority of Australians are below the poverty line and many need multiple jobs just to pay rent let alone thinking of buying. The boom is artificial because real estates and property owners grilled ppl in a pandemic

its is not financial assistance it is longer lease terms, almost no ability for landlords to end lease... housing as a right not an investment

If a landlord chooses to increase the rent they should lose their security bond if the tenant disagrees.

Is there any attempt to make landlords justify their rent increases? This is another reason to have a bill of rights. Housing needs to be recognised as a right and not left to the whims of the market. Gvt needs to do long term planning to ensure an adequate supply. auspol

Shut down air bnb to a capped level in any shire. Might be a good starting point.........

Raising rent assistance only serves to make landlords richer. They will take it in their next rent increase. End negative gearing and it will end this FARCE!!!

I haven’t bothered updating my actual rent paid with Centrelink for years. I already receive the maximum amount, but it’s woefully inadequate!

Just wait until Labor starts importing huge numbers of immigrants.

Where did all these buyers and renters come from?

What's Labor's plan rentals are extremely difficult to find
