Victoria's government-owned logging company VicForests illegally cleared protected Leadbeater's possum habitat and broke the law in 25 out of 30 of its logging areas, according to a government-commissioned audit of its activities.

The report includes a comment from VicForests, in which the agency says the clearing was a result of a GPS error. The assessment measured Vicforests' activities against 169 different legal requirements, and found that on average 6 per cent of those requirements were breached in each logging area, or "coupe".

Really is appalling that the gvt run company is proud that it only broke the law a moderate amount. With so much of our unique wildlife threatened with extinction, they should be setting an example. There needs to be harsh penalties so they take the matter seriously. auspol
