Hired as chief operating officer in 2015 and ascending to the top seat the following year, Hucker shepherded the company through its 2018 bankruptcy, emerging with a slimmed-down list of stores and a stronger balance sheet. Since then, the company has been on a “transformational journey,” he said, which is now in its third phase. As part of that, the company will have renewed more than 80% of its stores by the end of this year and positioned itself for growth.
“Our cultural transformation journey is a true testament to the power of trust,” he said. “Our associates trust in our leadership and strategy, which has ultimately helped us rebuild trust with our customers and communities. We’re in the people business; we just happen to sell groceries.”Before coming to Jacksonville, he was president and chief operating officer at St. Louis-based Schnuck Markets Inc. and had been president of Giant Food.
“I’m proud to work in a noble industry where we are engrained in our communities,” he said about the grocery business. “As a retailer, we play an influential role in our neighborhoods by nourishing people and putting food on the table for gatherings of family and friends. No matter who you are, we all share the common need to be fed and nourished.”
