the decade-old program that allows hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as children to avoid deportation and work legally.
A three-judge panel for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit decided that the Department of Homeland Security does not have the authority to provide protections to those immigrants under DACA and reasoned that the program violates Congress’ intent when it crafted the immigration statutes. Eventually, the challenge to DACA could reach the Supreme Court, where there is a 6-3 conservative majority that could end the program created during the Obama administration.
The court ruling spurred calls for action among Democratic lawmakers in Congress, who have spent months attempting to pass immigration legislation. Their efforts have been thwarted by Republicans, who have little interest in compromising on immigration at a time of skyrocketing border crossings.
Time for America to embrace immigration again and turn our backs on GOP regressive hate.
