Maybe running a business isn't for him. Has he ever thought about that?

He'd be far better off not bothering with his own business, and just living off the real jobs.

White Privilege in full effect.

It's a tough business and many of us have changed how we record as well and where. Wish him well, not easy times for anyone. Maybe find local bands who need demos, band might have a Patreon or funding source so you could work together. Best of luck.

Know how he feels.

Maybe he should only, run the equipment he needs and not leave some stuff on standby, as this could help him greatly, you can still do a lot without all the fancy audio equipment.

Basically his hobby job is not very profitable so he got a normal desk job.
