Western Australia’s Labor government has fired a warning shot at the Albanese government over potential plans toEven though several key government decision-makers will be overseas next week including the prime minister, energy minister and resources minister, speculation continues that a sub-cabinet group is working on a series of options. They include price caps and what some have dubbed a kind of “Russian-invasion profit levy”.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, speaking just before departing for 10 days of meetings across Asia, said the government would “land on a solution going forward prior to Christmas”, even as he continued to insist that “all sensible measures remain on the table”., telling the ABC’s Sabra Lane that “our preference is not that”.
Greens leader Adam Bandt claimed credit on Friday for pushing Labor towards imposing a tax on coal and gas companies.Mr Bandt said he wrote to Mr Albanese this week and urged the government to adopt a Greens plan that the Parliamentary Budget Office estimates would raise an extra $25 billion in revenue. That money “could be used to help households and businesses get off gas”.
