Markets that offer significant potential for SA citrus are the US, India, China, Japan, Vietnam, and the Philippines.Despite another record year for SA citrus exports, it has fallen short of predictions and only one in five farms are likely to make a profit, according to the Citrus Growers Association of Southern Africa .
The latest data from the CGA shows the region packed and delivered 164.8 million cartons of 15kg each for delivery to global markets this year. While this is an increase of 3.2 million cartons compared to 2021, it is 5.7 million fewer cartons than predicted at the start of the season in March. Citrus farmers were faced with a perfect storm of challenges, including higher input, transport and shipping costs. These challenges were coupled with"ongoing decay" of public infrastructure, erratic electricity supply, and a decline in real export prices, according to Justin Chadwick, CEO of the CGA.Get 14 days free to read all our investigative and in-depth journalism.
