This accounting giant doubled down on firmwide breaks. Here's how it affected job applications.

Heading into 2022, one of the big questions facing employers was how to differentiate themselves in a tight talent market.

That announcement, part of a larger package of employee-focused challenges called My+, caused a 20% increase in job applications, according to DeAnne Aussem, managing director PwC’s well-being leader. The firm had since 2003 conducted firmwide breaks in December, but felt it needed to do more. The firmwide breaks — five day long apiece — are part of an effort to create differentiators to working at PwC, especially as other big companies have announced their own beefed-up benefits and vacation packages. The changes are also driven by employees, whom the company surveys often to find out what works and what doesn’t and to allow for customization among employees, Aussem said.

Aussem said it's clear that the Covid-19 pandemic changed how workers think about their own careers. It has also changed what employees expect from their companies.
