More Greater Victoria restaurants are closing up as industry advocates call for shorter waits for foreign workers amidst a labour shortage.

“It’s not a question of people not wanting to work in construction or restaurants,” said Ian Tostenson, president and CEO of the BC Restaurant and Foodservices Association.

“It’s that we don’t have enough people in B.C., so, therefore, we need immigration, and therefore we should embrace these and be the most competitive province in all of Canada, and we’re not, we’re number ten,” he said.CHEK Newsletter“We waited three years for our first three employees and we’re currently waiting for our next four,” he said.

Part of the problem is a backlog in getting approval from the province before the application can even be sent to the federal government. “They could relax this requirement and get rid of the backlog. They could tell the federal government to go ahead and process immigration while the B.C. government catches up with its paperwork,” added Tostenson.

Housing. Regular people making normal wages can't afford to live in BC. Only people in real estate make money. Even doctors can't afford a home in Victoria.

Tell you’re HCO to stop killing people

I just don’t believe we don’t have enough people in BC, I think tons of people decided to change jobs during Covid sand we haven’t resettled into new jobs yet.

Are these the same business’s that complain about homeless junkies and want something done about it?

Bring in all the foreign workers you like, but where will they live?

There's lots of people around, they just don't want to work. And why should they when the bcndp will give them everything including drugs for free!

Too many resturaunts i guess. Believe in free markets, not gov socialism.

The whole industry is broken.

THE GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO PROVIDE SUPPORT!!!!!! It is their responsibility to subsidize the food and hospitality industries...WHERE ARE OUR TAXES?!!!

So are you gonna lower housing costs so people can afford to live here?

Let's raise taxes and make everyone pay more for everything. Then give out pennies for rebates. NDP Utopia, hooray!! I hear drugs are free.

Are they paying a living wage?

*housing fix needed
