The council announced on Thursday that it will not be taking part in the one-day national shutdown.

It released a statement to say that the decision was taken after a meeting between Santaco and the EFF leadership on Wednesday night. It's called on all taxi associations across the country to respect the decision to not down keys on Monday when thousands are expected to take to the streets to protest against load shedding and other issues.Meanwhile, Police Minister Bheki Cele has issued a warning to protestors taking part in demonstrations, saying that officers will be standing by to immediately deal with acts of violence or intimidation. He said measures are being put in place ahead of the EFF's national shutdown.

"This is a criminal offence. We are aware of many social media accounts claiming that hundred and thousands of followers are being mobilised to support the protest. "The majority of communities in various sectors of society, including Santaco, the Road Freight Association and organised structures within different communities, have rejected this call."
