The ACT Greens will bring forward a motion today in the Legislative Assembly, proposing a cap on the number of short-term rentals in Canberra.

abc.net.au/news/short-term-accomodation-keeping-out-renters-johnathan-davis-says/102164416A Canberra Greens politician says short-term accommodation companies like Airbnb and Stayz are keeping Canberrans from finding affordable rentals.

In a statement, he said the motion aimed to "acknowledge and respond" to evidence that short-term rental accommodation was negatively impacting the supply and price of long-term rental properties in the capital.Space to play or pause, M to mute, left and right arrows to seek, up and down arrows for volume."Many of these properties were once available on the long-term rental market.

"Imagine the impact on our long-term rental market if we had 1,000 properties come back to the long-term rental market overnight."Mr Davis said short-term rental apps were taking up a chunk of the market that could not be spared amid a housing crisis.

Or is it the politicians who make the rules up and get tax breaks to pay for accommodation

Backstabbing Landlords is causing this

Yes they are, across the world in fact. Just call it how it is.

Not just Canberrans.. the whole nation 😑

$86 a week for my small ex govt house in West Belconnen goes straight back to the ACT Govt as 'Land(lord) tax'. That's why Canberra rentals are so high. That and the damage a landlord has to put up with. My last tenants destroyed it. A hundred grand to fix.

The number of homes lost to AirBnB is a drop in the ocean compared to the number of residences (& hotel rooms) not built due to restrictive development rules.

I lived in Canberra over 10 years ago... affordable long term accommodation was difficult then...I would hate to think about what it is like now !

Absolutely yes.

No, it's the politicians, move parliament to Alice Springs and we solve both problems.

Silicon Valley already ruined their own home towns (San Fransisco and Seattle) and they care even less about yours, across the globe.

Seems werid to only ask this question now, hasn’t it been like 2-3 years

Lol yes
