Clive Ashpole in Kempston, Bedford, said he was faced with a 300% increase in his fuel costs this year. P J Ashpole and Son was opened by his grandfather in 1932, with the 67-year-old taking over the business in 2012 when his father died.Image source,Mr Ashpole said when his energy contract ended in February he was quoted a new one with the increased price.

He said he "didn't want to have the worry" of the higher bill, so decided to close the shop before the end of the financial year.He added that he felt "sorry" for businesses in a similar position to him. Mr Ashpole had worked in the shop for 50 years, since the age of 16, and said it was "really emotional" to close."People are giving me cards and saying 'thank you very much', it's really humbling. He said he would now "go on a holiday" and visit his grandchildren and great grandchildren in his free time.

British butchers out of business? French bakers out of business? Bank of America collapsed?

Can the government save it?

These butchers need to shut it.

And yet his Grandfather kept it going through ww2.

Shhhh... Blame the boatpeople PS: Please do not blame the 'innocent' politicians who are propping up a highly unpopular Fascistic Junta in Ukraine with billions of tax payers money to do a new version of Operation Barborossa.

Looks like I'm not the only one who thinks all prices are going up

And the Tories telling us everything is fine!

There will be no small business in 50 years.

Happy retirement

our butchers being betrayed by the Farages and Reece Mogg and the rest of the rich elite. now it appears they are allowing foreign importers to re-label their meat to infer it is British. feed the masses pig swill but yer can bet your breeches it isn't served at the top resturant

Shame to see things like this, so many small high street retailers are being shut down by the big supermarkets these days and the quality you get from supermarkets is so much lower than high street butchers/bakers

Rat your bugs like good little plebs.

Nothing to do with being around retirement age then?

He doesn't look 91 years old, let the man retire

He made his cash cow and is now retiring!!

Britain has joined the Asia-Pacific trade bloc that includes Japan and Australia. Only worth 0.08% after 10 years. Allows their businesses to sue our government and doesn’t allow courts to police disputes. Tory Carbon Footprint Madness.

His business is for the chop

He's such a nice guy and always went above and beyond for us in Bedford! Thanks Clive!

A butcher once bet me £100 that I couldn't reach several cuts of rump on the top shelf. I refused....the steaks were too high.

Stupid story, dude's retiring.

Not helped by lack of public support (post lock down) and large food processors dealing with companies that mix rotten pork with imported. If you can’t see what it is don’t eat it localfood not processedfood
