It seems everyone you speak to these days has a story about a recent negative experience with Uber, especially in Gauteng, Cape Town and Durban. Drivers arriving in visibly unroadworthy vehicles – never mind dents and scratches – petrol warning lights permanently on , a refusal to use air conditioning, driving dangerously, unclean cars – the list goes on. Quality control is practically out of the window.

So, with running costs and platform fees eating away much, or all, of that hypothetical R50 trip, how much could the driver possibly be earning for their time? This excludes the cost of the vehicle or insurance – drivers need to be earning around R100 a day to afford to rent a car provided by a financier– the going rate is between R2 000 and R2 500 per month “all in”, including insurance.

Agreed - better to use local drivers for longer trips and plan for delays with short ones.

CoCT impounds Ubers & they retaliate by giving me a 3* rating. Since moving to CPT last year my Uber rating has fallen from 4.98* to 4.35* 😂

Shoddy cars and they have become expensive. Won't consider them for airport trips anymore.

Yep. It’s a pity

Uber is not worth it anymore. Trips aren't profitable enough for their drivers, yet they always charge higher than other ride apps.

Been saying it for a while

Good article, the drivers complaint about higher petrol price and less gains for them, especially on short trips. Using uber nowadays its not the same experience for sure. Feels like they doing you a favour. Also, lots of bad mannered drivers. There's a need for introspection

In the UK too!
