A woman was encouraged to kill herself by a misogynistic group of trolls who posted mocked up naked images of her during a gratuitous and grotesque campaign of abuse.
Prosecuting, Francis McEntee explained that Newby's name was used to set up two websites which posted much of the abuse. These were created using similar names to the company in question and would be used to trap in customers and direct them to the hate-filled tweets. While there remains dispute over who exactly in the gang was responsible for each post, messages found on Newby's phone gave evidence of some involvement. Images saved on his phone included a screenshot of a Companies House page showing her address as well as some of the images posted on her account.
She said she believed the abuse was misogynistic and sexist and driven by an attempt from her predecessors to cover up fraudulent activity. She said she believes they used the "language of war" as they sought to destroy the company to cover their tracks and that she was collateral damage. Mr McEntee said Newby, 44, has no recent or relevant convictions and was not the sole perpetrator. He said the offences led to very significant life changes for the victim and a serious impact on her professional career. He submitted the offending should fall under the most serious category in sentencing guidelines, meaning a sentence of at least three-and-a-half years.
He argued that a lower categorisation should be considered and that this would allow the sentence to be suspended due to the impact on his wife who is a "care worker for disadvantaged youths". Mr Elias said the family cannot manage without his income and that his partner is the person who would suffer the most if he is jailed.
