Ruth Kelly, chair of Water UK, the industry body, said that public was “right to be upset” and that “more should have been done” to limit sewage spills. CapurrodDaniel reports:

A spokesperson for Ofwat said it welcomed the apology, adding: “This now needs to be turned into action.”

Water UK said that the plans including building storm tanks equivalent to 1,000 Olympic swimming pools. As well as investment, water companies are expected to collate their sewage data in a national data hub which will be available to the public. This is in line with a requirement from government for all sewage companies to monitor their discharges and make the data public.

“The Government has put the strictest targets ever on water companies to reduce sewage pollution and demanded that water companies deliver their largest ever infrastructure investment – £56bn. I am pleased that they are now taking action to deliver on this – but there is still a great deal more to do.
