Every year, the Houston Chronicle publishes The Chronicle 100, a series of lists that encompass the breadth of the regional economy. The largest public and private companies take center stage, but we also track the past year’s initial public offerings, most active homebuilders and most active residential communities, biggest law firms and best-selling autos.
The centerpiece is our ranked list of the best-performing public companies based in Houston. The ranking uses an index score based on the following variables, using data from S&P Global Market Intelligence and analyzed by the Chronicle. The companies were ranked based on scores in four categories: total revenue, earnings-per-share growth, annual revenue growth and one-year total return to shareholders on a dividend-reinvested basis.
The companies were ranked in each of the criteria, with each category given equal weight. The best possible score in each category is 1. To calculate the overall score, the four rankings were added and then divided by 4. If there was a tie, the change in earnings per share was used to break it. To qualify, a company must have been profitable in 2022 and have a share price above $1 as of April 19, 2023. It must also have been trading for all of 2022. Only companies with revenue exceeding $5 million in 2022 and $2.5 million in 2021 were eligible.
