Musk told Bloomberg in 2017 that he'd always wanted to build tunnels — he'd even pitched the idea of a Hyperloop in a 2013 Tesla blog post — but a Los Angeles traffic jam had been the final nail in the coffin.

A Hyperloop is an ultra-high speed transportation system that operates in a sort of vacuum, low-pressure system, in which"autonomous electric pods" can go over 600 miles per hour, according to the company's webpage.The Boring Company's current transportation systems look a lot different from the futuristic Hyperloops Musk initially pitched.in Hawthorne, California. It was opened to the public for demos that December.

The Boring Company opened the tunnel, which would be used to ferry people back and forth on Teslas, to the public in 2021. LVCC CEO Steve Hill said at the time that testing had shown the system could transport over 4,400 people each hour.

Musk's infrastructure venture has also had its fair share of stalled projects over the years. In 2021, the company quietly scrubbed any mention of its plans to and Washington DC from its website. The projects had been announced in 2018 and 2017, respectively, but faced pushback due to environmental regulations. Plans to build tunnels in Chicago and San Jose have also been dropped.in several other major cities, including Miami and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Those projects are currently in limbo.Like any Musk company, The Boring Company has some playful merchandise.
