The deal to save SAA - which entails taking it out of business rescue, clearing all debt, and recapitalising it - was announced two years ago.

In June 2021, Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan announced that Takatso – a consortium formed by infrastructure fund manager Harith and Global Aviation – would buy 51% of SAA, the most significant privatisation in decades. The choice of strategic equity partner was controversial.
