Big business will need to forge an alliance with community groups if it wants Treasurer Jim Chalmers to heed calls for wholesale tax reform, outgoing Productivity Commission chairman Michael Brennan says.agenda due to political and budgetary difficulties, disappointing groups like the Business Council of Australia, which have been vocal about raising the GST and cutting inefficient taxes to lift productivity.

The decision comes amid a debate over how to lift Australia’s lacklustre labour productivity, after three years of no gains. “There are technologies out there now, if we were using them more to the full, we could extract some significant gains,” Mr Brennan said.that Chris Barrett, who preceded him as chief-of-staff to Labor treasurer Wayne Swan, will succeed Mr Brennan at the end of his term next month.
