A rental increase meant five housemates were being asked to pay almost £1,000 each to live in a mould-infested house in south London

ReporterA 21-year-old said she lives in fear of “losing her home at any point” due to the volatility of London’s, after recently being forced to move when her landlord upped her rent by 25 per cent.

The rent was increased despite there being various problems with the house, including a black mould infestation, mice and a broken boiler, which had to be fiddled with every time someone wanted to shower. “They just didn’t want to speak to us. They didn’t care that we were living in anxiety and so frightened everyday that we would get that email saying that we’d have to leave and then frantically try to find somewhere else,” Ms Holmes said.

Ms Holmes was a student at the London School of Economics when she moved into the house, however she is currently taking a year out to work as a communications officer in Parliament as she was struggling to afford to live in London as a student.
