Nearly a quarter of people aged 35 to 44 have considered cohabiting with their parents to share living expenses

The couple first decided to move in with her parents in 2021, during the peak of the Covid pandemic. They were facing high rents in Nottingham, where they lived at the time, and wanted to cut their bills.

After assessing their options, the family eventually decided to build a £106,000 apartment – which has its own kitchen, bedroom and bathroom – and it was constructed over the next six months.Madison and her partner currently pay her parents £600 per month to live there, which works out at around £300 a month cheaper than they would pay if they rented a one-bedroom flat locally.

“It gave the main house a bit more space for everyone. I love living with my parents but this has given us a bit more privacy. We probably only go to the main house once a week or so, maybe for a family meal. And then they maybe come over for a coffee once a week or so too.”
