Speech writer Lucinda Holdforth and NIB chief executive Mark Fitzgibbon are ending their discussion by sharing their views on the qualities good leaders should possess. Fitzgibbon says a leader should have authenticity, humour and understand they are equal to their peers.

He also says it’s appropriate for leaders to at times be “assertive”, provided they understand the circumstances that call for a more aggressive leadership approach. Holdforth says leaders should be forward-thinking and aware of the power they have within their organisation, including the areas where they lack it. “Leadership is about power, right? So what we want is a leader who will understand how to use power and how to focus on the areas where they don’t have any,” she says.
