Tim Seymour of CNBC's 'Fast Money' shares advice for cannabis investors: it's important to understand how to approach this emerging market.

and founder and Chief Investment Officer of Seymour Asset Management, has become the face of cannabis finance on TV, often analyzing marijuana stocks and reporting from industry events on national television – while also keynoting at many of these.

“Therefore, investors need to get a hold of all the information that is available to them. Go through public filings and specific information as it relates to legal partnerships, ownership of assets, the legislative environment in the core markets and geographies that the companies do business in,” he told me.“Imagine I was investing in Brazil,” Seymour suggested.

Investors need to always try to stay a step ahead of the curve, he said. “They need to try to not be investing like they were last year, rewarding companies in terms of their valuation but instead to try to understand which companies are growing and evolving, becoming larger consolidators and players in the asset department, while using that size and execution to be there for the next round of development in the sector.

“I think to do that, investors need to try to speculate what the legislative cycle will be, especially in the U.S., what federal legal changes will take place in the next 3 to 12 months, and what that will mean for the ability of legacy players to grow – but will also expose them to external competition from outside the sector.
