A distinctive 1927 Spanish-style home built by Nathan Straus Nayfach, the architect of downtown’s iconic Alemeda Theater, is back on the market for $410,000 after receiving some much-needed TLC.

The original owner of the four-bedroom, two-and-half-bath home was a wealthy Mexican banking family named the Ortegas, who relocated to San Antonio in the early 1900s. However, the 3,660-square-foot property fell into disrepair while serving as student housing for some 20 years. Though it has reclaimed much of its former glory after gaining a new buyer in 2021, the house still needs work to update its windows, foundation, HVAC and roof, according to the listing agent.

Even so, it's easy to see the potential. The home greets guests with a grand foyer featuring a 20-foot ceiling, Redondo tile floor and stairs leading to a hallway balcony framed by pillared arches. The kitchen is large and bright, with historic charm, original cabinets and lots of counter space. The bathrooms are similarly traditional, exuding a shabby chic vibe that invites preservation rather than updating. On the second floor, the primary suite has hardwood floors, a fireplace and access to a large covered patio.
