The historic market town was awarded five stars for food in the survey by Which? Travel

A recent survey by Which? Travel has revealed that Ludlow, a picturesque market town in Shropshire, boasts some of the finest food and drink in the UK. More than 9,000 people were asked to rate the culinary offerings of their favourite inland towns and villages, with Ludlow emerging as the top choice for its exceptional food and drink.

The historic town, which is home to more than 500 listed buildings, was awarded five stars for its food - the only inland town to achieve such a high ranking in the survey. The poet John Betjeman once described Ludlow as "the loveliest town in England". Ludlow's food scene is characterised by a focus on fresh, local ingredients. A spokesperson for Which? said: "Instead of a handful of high-end eateries, there's a culture of local produce as well as numerous pubs and cafes, served by people who care about the food," reports the Express.Among the town's top-rated establishments are The Old Downton Lodge, currently the best-rated restaurant on Tripadvisor, and Vaughan's Sandwich Bar, which tops the list for cafes.

For those keen to sample local produce, the Ludlow Local Produce market takes place on the second and fourth Thursday of each month. The market showcases food and drink produced within a 30-mile radius of the town, promoting sustainable and locally sourced fare. Wells in Somerset was recognised as the UK's second-smallest city, has been ranked as the second-best inland destination for food.
