Apple's biggest historical acquisition was Beats Electronics and Beats Music for $2.6 billion.

Apple was involved in discussions to buy Intel's modem chip division, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.

The news underscores Apple's increased willingness to consider making large multi-billion acquisitions with its substantial free cash flow. It also has over $245 billion in cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities on its balance sheet. Intel currently provides LTE modem chips for Apple's current generation of iPhones.
